We asked Lele Sadoughi, one of J.crew’s former heads of jewelry design, about these issues to teach us the truth about how to properly store and care for precious jewelry.

Metal veneers and panels naturally tarnish over time when exposed to body oils and other natural elements.
To preserve the gold coating of jewelry, we recommend that you avoid contacting it with hard materials and placing jewelry next to items such as perfume and hair spray after use. Use a dry cloth to polish your jewelry every few weeks.

The best way to store gold-plated jewelry is to store it in cloth bags to prevent it from being exposed to sunlight and scratches from other pieces of jewelry.

How to Clean Gold?
You can clean your expensive jewelry at home by simply pouring a few drops of dishwashing liquid into a cup of warm water and placing the jewelry in it. Soak the jewelry for 15 minutes and gently scrub it with a soft toothbrush. Rub and clean it.

Every few weeks, rub the jewelry, then wash it in cold water and buff it with a cloth to dry.
